While there's still a long way to go, there are a handful of gay Korean dramas that break the mold and feature LGBTQ+ characters. In fact, there are now even several K-dramas dedicated to a gay love story and helping the rise of the new "Boy’s Love (BL)" genre. The representation may feel small to the Western audience, but they have a strong impact in a country that previously never tackled these themes on TV. 'They seemed to have more of a fluid sexuality, or were just extremely sexual, even if they identified as straight in their private lives,' he said of the gay-for-pay. Over the years, there has been a growing number of LGBTQ+ representation in K-dramas, whether involving same-sex couples or small storylines. That said, adult entertainment publicist Mike Stabile told Mic that he believes the sexuality of a gay-for-pay porn star is likely to be a bit more flexible than your average joe. However, when it comes to K-dramas, the genre has been a bit more conservative. American shows have, more recently, been noted for showcasing LGBTQ+ representation on the small screen, albeit in a relatively small way. Representation in Korean television has been improving over the years, and the best gay K-dramas have some of the most heartwarming storylines that push the subgenre forward.
